Yes, he likes attention, especially because it usually comes from girls. If you noticed, almost all the girls like the car, so it has definite sex appeal. I (and Eric) also passionately dislike American cars. Hence the emphasis on import. There's also something to be said for being able to walk up to a guy, hand him a briefcase of money and drive away in a sports car that's completely paid for. Sure, he could've gotten a nicer/faster/more (truly) exotic car by going in debt, but so what?
How would you define exotic? A Lamborghini? It's still European, it just costs more/is higher quality. So is exotic only about superiority of craftmanship?

-I agree about the attention and aspect of female appeal when a guy drives a sports car as I have experienced this as well with previous cars that I've owned (Porsche 911 Turbo, etc.).
-I applaud you for disliking American cars. It would be a cold day in hell before I would buy any American car.
-I agree that it does feel good to be able to buy a car outright and not have to finance it. My family and I have always done exactly this and I do agree that it is very much a great feeling to actually own it rather than be a slave making payments to a bank for virtually the entire time you have the car. As for the "briefcase of money" comment, this only makes him look tacky and shifty- like he's trying to show off or is a drug dealer or something. Most people that buy cars outright use a check.
-I define exotic as being traditionally in that category of elite European sports cars (Ferrari, etc.). If he had an Esprit, then I'd consider it an exotic, but certainly not an Elise. There are many factors in defining an "Exotic" car and thus it is somewhat difficult to explain.

I don't like American cars these days either. It seems like the only thing American car companies can get right these days are the trucks.

Hmm. I think I would prefer a guy to drive an Elise rather than a 911. Porsches are respectable, but everyone and their uncle has them. Whether the Elise meets your 'criteria' or not doesn't change the fact that it's affordable, unique, sporty and (some might say) attractive. Don't know why you have a vendetta against it. You can't truly admire the Esprit if you don't admire Lotus. The Elise isn't their top-of-the-line car, but that doesn't mean it's not worth driving. I like being in it

^^^I didn't say the 911 was more or less attractive... I was merely pointing out that I understand what was being said about females being attracted to sports cars and such. That being said, I did stand out quite a bit when I had that car- afterall, how many 17 year olds drive a brand-new 911 Turbo? not many. lol Also, I really don't care as to your personal taste of 911 vs Elise as you don't appear to be my type anyawy- for a variety of reasons.
I have something against the Elise as it is basically like buying the discount version of something and then trying to act like you're special. The Elise is merely a futuristic-looking small pseudo-sportscar that can best be described as an "attention-whore go cart"...and I'm sure you "like being in it" due to the attention it receives. Seriously, lets be honest, a $50k car is nothing that special...when he drives a Ferrari, then come back and I'll compliment it, but until then I'll stick to my various opinions.
I realize that he's your friend/BF and thus are a bit biased, but you need to understand that in reality, that car truly isn't all that. Maybe someday you'll see reality rather than being so star-struck because you found a guy with a nice car.
lol
