I've seen that happen to a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Honda Civic or Accord... Both not mine but...you're not alone!

mmmm looks like someone's car was running a little lean?? I think everyone should invest in a Air:Fuel gauge so they can actually know rather or not their car is about to blow up ;D. Also, i dunno if it was turboed or not but if u let a turbo car sit for a while they tend to get really really hot due the failure of air passing through the Intercooler to cool the charge air down... another words, keep a turboed car moving, that is, if it has an intercooler. Especially a side mount.
Electrical problem also. I love VWs and <sarcasm> their indvidual COIL PACKS </sarcasm>

Yea, my insurance isn't exactly happy with me. No, it didn't even have turbo, just a regular 2.0 engine.

i went to the dealer the other day to replace another coil pack in mine and i mentioned this to them and they said that sometimes the fires can start from the CAT if one or more of the coil packs is bad. it basically causes the car to start misfiring and the unburnt fuel catches fire in the CAT.

no matter how much i look at it, it still seems like a head on collision w/ fire damage.

what the, how the hell did that happen. You would thinkt that a car company would be able to prevent that from happening.

You would think, from what I understand though, VW is trying to turn around. They are moving all of their factories from Mexico back to Germany, or at least that's what I was told.

They have had this same problem with the jettas since they have introduced them midway through the 99 car year even to this day, I believe. What year was your car, just out of curiosity?

Did anyone get it on video? Now that would have been priceless. I hope that this would classify the car as a lemon or some sort of replacement by VW.

no, unfortunately there was no video. it didn't classify as a lemon because it was 3 years after the initial purchase of it and VW honestly didn't care at all. my insurance covered it fully though, and is now suing VW.

I just dropped a new 2.0 in my GTI. I had a supercharger on my last motor for about 35k miles. Totally fucked the head. Block was overheated about a million times because I couldn't afford to fix it. I ended up paying for it in the end.
What was the actual cause of the explosion? I'm enough of a VW enthusiast that probably would have heard about this if it were a common problem. That 2.0 crossflow motor design really hasn't changed at all since it was designed in 1978. It's a fairly bulletproff motor.

Well, from what I understand (and I know NOTHING about cars) was that there was a problem with some sort of harness? like an engine harness? well whatever the case, the harness didn't quite fit the new jetta model so it was stretched to make it fit so that they wouldn't have to waste all of the old harnesses. eventually, the cables wore down because they were stretched and then they would snap. I don't know if the snap actually started the fire or what . . . like I said I don't know much about cars, this is what the mechanic told me dad, who told me. there is a website that talks about it, I will look for it and post it if I can find it.
