They could also switch to a modern operating system that actually supported the idea of separate user spaces. Add in fast user switching and they'd be all set.

that's true. you're talking 2gb ram for xp/4gb for vista for a comfortable experience; essentially high end/gaming machines. not the typical situation unfortunately.

xp and vista still don't *really* support multiple users without a central server to manage user accounts, even then there is not a full separation of userspaces.

^ why not? I love having a user account for myself and one for anyone else. With fast user switching you can keep both logged in at once. It allows both people to set the computer up as they wish. For example, I like to keep a compiler, ftp client, adobe creative suite, etc in my dock; most other people just want a web browser, IM, and some photo program. By using separate accounts I'm able to keep the computer setup as I like, while not cluttering up other people's experience.
