Do you know how the people of Laos capture elephants?
They dig huge pits and wait for elephants to fall in. The pits are so deep that elephants can't climb out. Once in the pit, they remain for three days until they let out a terrible wail. Hunters call this wail a goodbye to the elephant's herd, and in doing so, the elephant has lost its will to live. At this time, the elephant is extracted from the pit, and it is so thankful that it will be loyal despite adverse conditions, such as torture and menial labor.
At certain points in the night, elephants are known to cry out for their heards, hoping against hope that it will one day hear the call of its family.
