I have another one of his paintings in my room, its a river scene but it has the same kind of sky. Its called Night Stars. I also like this one.

Factually speaking, this is the most looked at painting in the entire world.
To some symbologists, it means the spiritual harmony of differences; you have the swirling stratosphere that appears to be some sort of ying-yang in the sky or in the ocean. The stars, or lights, appear to be the constellation of virgo. Maybe Van Gogh was a virgo? I don't know.
And then, you have that one tendril rising up from the depths of the picture, upwards towards the sky-- some thinking it means that it unifies the earth and the sky. VG didn't even finish this picture; you can't tell from the image above, but you can tell that it isn't finished if you look at the edges.
Other more morbid individuals believe that this is an apocalyptic image; and other religious individuals think that it is the tumult of the angels from the sky.
I personally don't like VG's paintings; I don't like the short stroke method. I do not think he's a genius, either. You know what they say: "War unites the English; Van Gogh separates them." There are other things in here that a pick-up-and-go symbologist can study, but I'm not writing a paper on it.
