You can really only see 5 other people (besides those marching) in this picture. There could always be people standing around that you just don't see in the picture. I can see how it can have some symbolism to it, but the picture could have also been taken that way just to show it as if he is the only one standing, even if that might not be the case.

Tuesday, November 22, 2005 10:50 AM

tech. u dont stand untill the flag is passing you so.. tweak is probably correct

you know, to be quite frank, theres probably a great deal of service men and women who joined for the reasons except to fight for our country. not that they arent patriotic but that they're patriotism takes a back seat to the money, the traveling and the education and discipline.

I think the point of the picture was to show that a man who is having physical difficulties can stand to respect the colors of our country, yet others around him without said difficulties are not motivated to do so, demonstrating the changing values in our society.

The older generation was taught to obey authority. After the governmnet abused that authority during the Vietnam era, the younger people were taught to question authority.

Just an observation.

how does the flag symbolize authority? that's complete bunk. authorities were always meant to be questioned, not allowed to trample all over everyone else.

not like the flag's doing that but still.

I mean the hooters float may have gone by and he could have stood to get a good look but then got tired from all the oggling and decided to sit down.

Why would you not question authority? People who take everything served to them without thinking about it should be shot IMO.

Plant City population after the shooting: 2 (the kids who eat mushrooms in cow pastures).

Please explain how they abused their authority. Is this from the hippie point of view?

I'm farrrrrrrr from a hippie, Dan. The governmnet abused that authority by sending only poor kids, mostly minority, to a war that we clearly should have never been involved in and let the politicians run the war. Total dead because of their blunder? Over 50,000.

Remember the draft? That was not a volunteer force in that war. Rich college kid? Exempt. Rich politician's kid? Exempt. Contributor to a congressman's campaign? Exempt. If that's not an abuse of authority, I don't know what is.

^Yea, I have to agree with you regarding the Vietnam war- the government should not have gotten involved and should have let the military run the war themselves.

What if this man is a covert suicide bomber just waiting to make his presence (and parallel death) known?

Or maybe he just has hemorrhoids.

I don't know.. this picture kind of reminds me of one of those old ornery people who refuses to sit down while everyone else politely remains seated so the people in the back rows can also see the parade...

Maybe I've been to Disney too many times.

it pisses me off that the people that are supporting this picture are just name calling and generally being not only 1. racist but 2. closed minded.

is that what supporting america entails? i doubt it.

it saddens me that the people that support america the most know the least about why this country was founded.

^nice.

yea because if we dont do something soon, we'll be overrun with commies who will cut your tongue off for gov't dissent.

my grandfather, a serviceman, would look at people's comments and say "ah, kids." but if he saw someone supposedly a big supporter of "america" and the military tell someone else to get out of the country, he'd probably be pissed.

Wednesday, November 23, 2005 5:09 AM

HairyBearChaos

srsly i completely agree with brad and dan and aaron...

and USMCFro dude, i'm not disparaging anyone who fights for this country or anyone else in any other country who fights for theirs but i am opposed to this particular "war" that's going on. just because i think this picture is being misconstrued by a bunch of nationalists in a pissing contest to see who is most patriotic doesn't mean i hate the u.s., those who fight for it, and other such things.

goddammit you people are so dogmatic. what makes the u.s. so special? we're forcing our supposedly "perfect" view of government and living onto others. that's not really cool.
