job preference, hooters.

I'm curious as to why Hooters shows poor job preference.

Keep in mind it is a restaurant where a moderately attractive girl with a laid back attitude can make almost double what girls with no serving experience will make.

It is my "nazi-feminist" perspective. We don't need to get into another discussion like that again, at least not over alcohol.

I'm sober now... and "femi-nazi" has a much nicer flow ;)

Well, I'm not very sober. I'm cracked out on adderall writing this paper.
I agree that it has a nicer flow but I don't really consider myself one anyhow.

there are many women of my generation (x) who would not identify themselves as feminists. i believe this most has to do with the 1970'simage of feminists as bra-burning-man-hating-bitter women. and while those women certainly did exist (and to some extent still do), they by no means represented the whole. they were simply the most radical faction of the movement and of course received the most press. personally, i am unable to understand how any woman can refuse to call herself a feminist. for me, the two go hand-in-hand. but many young women believe that they are on equal ground with men- and to some extent we are. but many of these yoiung women miss the subtle oppression in everyday life- that virtually all cleaning product commercials show women using these products, that while we now can have a fulfilling career outside the home, we are still expected to be room mothers and primary caretakers of our families. i believe there are all kinds of feminists. i think the woman who works at hooters is a feminist- she is using the system and men's desire for her own means (money). i believe that women in the sex industry are feminists- all of these women use the system for their own gain, be it economic, personal, or other. these women aare exercising their right to determine their own lives, and if they choose to do that by working at hooters or in pornography or in prostituition, then good for them!

I quoted the above comment because according to my beliefs, I disagree with this position.
I take a different form of feminism, in that everything should be equal. In saying this, women should not use "hooters" to receive power over men [jobs, tips, attention]. Not only does this break down everything that feminists have worked for towards equality but also it demeans women, whether they realize it or not. This explained process of women using their sexuality for power does not actually give them power. It in fact, gives power to the men. The men have the power to put women on a pedestal and have the power to take them off. They have this power because these women are receiving their power from what the men desire and if they do not desire that body type [etc] then they have the power to take you off of that pedestal and call names. It is much more complex than this so it is hard to go into detail on here. It is easier understood with diagrams and so on. In short, women should use their knowledge and other attributes to receive equality and proper power rather than their sexuality, which caters to men’s desires.

^^ doesn't anything that anyone uses to gain a social advantage rely on the desires of others?
By your logic someone selling anti-bush t-shirts at a time when it is popular to take an anti-bush stance is actually weakening the position of t-shirt salespeople. While it may be true that the t-shirt manufacturer is following the desires of the consumers, that manufacturer is also using their knowledge and forethought to give themselves an advantage even if it is only for the time being.

While some of the Hooters staff may not consciously go into work thinking "men like the way I look, I will use that to my advantage", they would probably quickly find another job if men stopped coming in and leaving larger than usual tips.

Realistically, a woman who is using "knowledge and other attributes" to receive equality is just exploiting some other set of desires, be it the desire to have a smooth running business, the desire to learn a science, or the desire to develop a new medical procedure. All of these desires place something on a pedestal, why is it so wrong when what is placed on the pedestal is the woman as an aesthetically pleasing entity.

Would you look down upon a male model, saying that he hurts all men by using his sexuality? Would you look down on a more intelligent person using their intelligence to make more money? Why do you look down upon women who decide that they want to work at Hooters? By making a value judgement are you not taking away that particular woman's equality? Basically saying that she is too dumb to make a good decision?

why is it that you draw a distinction between exploiting a natural trait such as beauty and one such as intelligence? For all practical purposes these traits are something that someone is just born with, shouldn't everyone use whatever they have to their advantage?

I understand your pedestal statement, but even if men value a woman's beauty they can't take it away simply by not responding to it; just as someone can't take away another's knowledge just by deciding that it is no longer important.
