it may be in bad taste, but I don't really think that it is something that should offend people to the point where I'd take it down. Really I doubt that anyone on the site has any real "stock" in the holocaust.
If there were one person on the site that lived through the holocaust I'd gladly remove the picture, but until that person comes forward I see no need to.
The only people who could be offended by this now would be people who are a slave to their indoctrination, they should learn to think for themselves.

Oh, since I'm going to sleep I should probably clarify my previous post.
It's obvious that I am not a promoter of nazism or israel, anyone who read my posts can see that.
The only people who I think can be rightfully offended by a picture like this are those jewish people that lived under nazi rule as they would have an unconscious reaction to the image and would have the possibility of bad memories coming back.
Everyone else has no reason to be upset sans what they have been taught. For all we know the holocaust never happened, Hitler never existed, and there was no World War II; signs point to those previous three statements being false, but since we did not experience them we cannot hold them as true in the same way someone who did experience them does.
Getting so upset and offended by something that you have been taught always strikes me as wrong, like jewtang getting so pissed off over his religion, or the fanatical christians wanting to boycott places that say "happy holidays". So when I saw this pic I liked that it would shake people up and take them out of their comfort zones. I think that the notion that it is wrong to be offended is completely stupid and I don't know how it gained such popularity in the US
So once again, if someone here actually lived under nazi control or lived through the holocaust please let me know and I'll remove the photo. Otherwise, get over it.

The swastika was a religious symbol througout history... It only gained a negative connotation after it's meaning was subverted by the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP). The one superimposed on this flag is not the same swastika used by the germans in WWII.

Anyone can feel offended if they want. There's not right or wrong situation where one is rightfully offended.
Though my family is Jewish, I really don't consider myself to be, but I can see why someone would be offended by this picture. The star of david is a sacred symbol and for it to be defaced like this could be, understandably, appalling to someone who takes pride in their religion. And even though the swastika didn't have a negative connotation until WWII, most people now see it as a negative symbol and relate the two when they see it.
Saying that the Holocaust never happened is the most absurd statement I've ever heard. No none of us experienced it, clearly, but my great-grandmother did and I've been to various other speakings of Holocaust survivors. Don't ever tell me that such an abomination in history never really occurred. That is what offends me and not because my family is Jewish, but because it is such an ignorant statement.

I'm not really upset. You can say whatever you want. I understand that you put it up to get a reaction out of people and I love that, but I really disagree with this statement.
quote :

and this

As I said, noone on this site experienced it first hand, but to deny that it happened is incredibly asinine. Not that you, specifically, are denying it. Saying that the Holocaust never happened is like saying that the entire war never happened.

i get offended only because i am into reading up on the holocaust and learning about it. i planned holocaust week last year at Hillel and am planning this years one as well, as most likely i will next years. to me the holocaust is something i don't take lightly to. anything related to it and somebody mocking it like you are here offends me. i personally thank g-d didn't have any family over there, but that doesn't matter. i care because if people's stories who were in the holocaust aren't told, then when all the survivors are gone, nobody will be around to say what really happened. its important to hear stories from survivors. something like this is putting down those who survived, and its like a slap in the face to them. to say that nobody can get offended by it unless they were there is absurd, nobody on this site was alive then, its a matter of principle and having enough common sense not to post something like this. i'm sorry this is something that is inexcusable and this site will be reported to the proper authorities for allowing this kind of stuff to be posted on its site.

That's fine if people want to be offended, but they have no reason to get offended other than what they've been taught.
What if you had been taught to be offended by the color yellow? If I posted a picture that was just all yellow and you got offended should I take it down?
I would find it different if when you were a child you were locked in an all yellow room and tortured, because then the yellow has real meaning to you, but if it is just because of what you were told growing up then I really don't care if it bothers you.

what if someone were to post a hammer and sycle? (sp?) you know, stalin mass murdered jews too... we just kept it hush hush because they were are allies... but in fact, he not only murdered them in gulags but als shipped a lot of them to box cars to death camps (concentration camps are totally different from death camps-- just an fyi) but would jewtang had a fit if someone posted a soviet flag? probably not. i find it fascinating that this reaction only is displayed toward the swastika and nothing else, as if Nazi Germany was the only country ever to persecute jews... Until you are educated you dont have the right to complain. And for the record, I am indifferent when it comes to this picture.

Indifferent is how one should be unless this symbol was integral in something that actually caused him personal pain.
You've caught exactly what I was saying. Jewtang and others here have a reaction to the swastika because they were taught to, not because they had any bad encounters with a nazi or nazism. These learned reactions are exactly what precipitates prejudice in society.

actually i wasn't always into my religion, i only became more involved with it since i started here at usf. i actually was never taught to get mad or have this reaction to the swastika by anybody. i read books on the holocaust, saw movies about it and heard stories from survivors about what they want through. since i started doing this i have formed my own opinion and have grown to hate the swastika. nazi germany gets blamed alot more, because it was so public and the country who actually started using death camps and concentration camps, and the first to start terrorizing the jews during this period. you don't hear much about stalin, because he wasn't anything like hitler. granted i don't know much about stalin, i do know that nobody in this day and age has been worse to the jews than hitler. crazypills69 i never said that, please stop putting words in my mouth. i actually had a girl say have a merry christmas to me today, even though i have a big jewish star that i wear every where i go. stupid lady

So now we can tell people when can and cannot be offended? You have to have experience with something for you to be "allowed" to be offended? That is the stupidest reasoning I have ever heard. Hurrrr...
The picture was put up and you don't want to be told to take it down, I get that, but be prepared for the backlash you get for your actions...
P.S. I hate the color yellow. I was attacked with yellow crayons and markers when I was a child. My parents made me wear yellow head to toe and drive a yellow car. Please take down any pictures that contain the color yellow in your gallery or I'll run you over with my school bus.
